Vážení,

děkujeme vám za podporu naší petice za záchranu Bienále Brno. K dnešnímu dni jsme nasbírali 2790 podpisů. Takový ohlas jsme při otevření petice v květnu loňského roku nečekali.

Od dubna loňského roku, kdy Moravská galerie v Brně oznámila, že se „rozhodla upustit od pravidelných přehlídek Bienále Brno a nahradit je udržitelnou trvalou digitální platformou“, jsme učinili několik kroků ve snaze bienále zachránit. Vedle spuštění petice jsme uspořádali veřejné setkání na UMPRUM, uskutečnili řadu online schůzek a zejména se sešli se zástupci Ministerstva kultury ČR a vedením Moravské galerie v Brně.

Současný stav našeho úsilí není zcela pozitivní. Ani po předložení našich argumentů pro pokračování Bienále Brno (včetně petice) nemá Moravská galerie v Brně, konkrétně její současné vedení, o zachování bienále zájem. Stále apelujeme na Ministerstvo kultury a město Brno, které se zdají být relativně otevřené pokračovat v diskusi o Bienále Brno. Teprve budoucnost však ukáže, zda tato cesta někam vede.

V tuto chvíli hledáme další možnosti. Kupříkladu instituci, která by byla ochotna Bienále Brno dočasně hostit, než najde svůj nový stálý domov.

Dear all,

Thank you very much for supporting our petition to Save the Brno Biennial. We have collected 2790 signatures to date, which we did not expect when opening the petition in May of last year.

Since the Moravian Gallery in Brno announced in April last year that it had “decided to abandon the regular exhibitions of the Brno Biennial and replace them with a sustainable permanent digital platform,” we have made several steps in our attempt to save the biennial. Next to launching the petition, we organized a public meeting at UMPRUM, the art academy in Prague, held several online meetings, and mainly met with the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the directorship of the Moravian Gallery in Brno.

The current state of our efforts is not entirely positive. Even after presenting our arguments for continuing with the Brno Biennial (including the petition), The Moravian Gallery in Brno, specifically its current directorship, is not interested in preserving the biennial. We keep appealing to the Ministry of Culture and the City of Brno, who seem both relatively open to continuing the discussion about the future of the Brno Biennial, though whether this will lead anywhere remains to be seen.

At the moment, we are looking for other possibilities, for example, an institution that would be willing to temporarily host the Brno Biennial until it finds its new permanent home.

  • The Brno Biennial is a crucial event – it should not disappear. It played a major role in our own practice (in 2012, we were invited to develop a large exhibition for the biennial), and continues to play an important role in the practices of countless other designers and artists. It is a place where east meets west, where young meets old, where communities and individuals merge. It’s a gathering that can’t be replaced with a website.

  • Signing in support of all alternative thought and creative exchange. The sustainability argument is of course compelling — but is the only alternative an on-line archive? What about a triennial, participants traveling by train, guest speakers from the realm of ecological design explaining the illusions created by carbon offsetting and so on. Isn’t this an opportunity to become the first truly sustainable design gathering. Experimenting with that, keeping the Brno Biennial going on a ‘reduced flame’ and eventually leading the way?

  • I am a graphic design student from Slovakia studying in Ostrava. I have had knowledge about this wonderful event for three years now, but unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to visit yet. If Bienale Brno got canceled, I would be really disappointed, angry even. And I bet I am not the only one. Think about younger generations too. Digital is okay but have hands on something is just so much better. Every graphic designer and creative must know that.
